Nigerian music star Burna Boy took Afrobeats to one of football’s biggest stages on October 26, presenting Arsenal and England forward Bukayo Saka with the 2026 Sócrates Award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London.
The moment brought together two prominent figures from music and football, with Burna Boy representing Nigeria’s entertainment industry while Saka received international recognition for his humanitarian work.
According to reports by Premium Times and The Guardian Nigeria, Burna Boy became the first Nigerian artiste to present an award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Why Bukayo Saka Won the Award
Saka received the Sócrates Award in recognition of his charitable work with BigShoe, an organisation that helps children access essential medical treatment.
Through the initiative, the Arsenal forward has supported medical operations for children who might otherwise struggle to obtain the care they need.
Reports indicate that his contributions helped fund medical procedures for about 120 children in Kano State, Nigeria, in 2022. He subsequently supported treatment for another 100 children in Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania in 2023.
During his acceptance speech, Saka highlighted the importance of helping children who lack access to basic opportunities. He also read a letter from a young beneficiary in Rwanda whose eyesight improved after receiving medical care through BigShoe.
The story illustrated the real-life impact of charitable initiatives, extending the significance of the award beyond football statistics, trophies and individual achievements.
Burna Boy Shares His Football Dream for Nigeria
Before presenting the award, Burna Boy spoke about a football academy initiative he started in Nigeria to support grassroots football development.
The singer expressed his hope that the initiative would help develop Nigerian talent capable of competing internationally and eventually earning recognition at the Ballon d’Or.
His remarks reflected a wider ambition to see more Nigerian footballers gain opportunities on the global stage.
Burna Boy’s appearance also highlighted the growing presence of Nigerian music stars at major international sporting events. The singer previously performed at the 2023 UEFA Champions League final kick-off show.
What Is the Sócrates Award?
Established in 2022 by France Football in collaboration with Peace and Sport, the Sócrates Award recognises humanitarian work and social initiatives connected to football.
It is named after the late Brazilian footballer Sócrates, who was known not only for his achievements on the pitch but also for his social activism.
Previous recipients include Senegalese forward Sadio Mané, Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior and Spanish footballer Jenni Hermoso. In 2025, the honour went to the Xana Foundation, established by football manager Luis Enrique in memory of his daughter.
A Moment Connecting Nigerian Music and Global Football
Burna Boy’s presentation to Saka was more than a celebrity appearance. It placed Nigerian music in the spotlight at an internationally recognised football event while celebrating an athlete using his influence to support children in need.
For Saka, the award recognises a contribution beyond his performances for Arsenal and England. For Burna Boy, the occasion provided another opportunity to connect Nigerian entertainment with a global audience.
As African music continues to reach major international platforms, moments like this demonstrate how entertainment, sport and humanitarian work can intersect.
