Beyond acting, Duru also served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010 and received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007.

Duru's death comes two years after the family lost his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024. The actor had publicly expressed his grief at the time, receiving messages of sympathy from colleagues and members of the public.
The loss of the veteran performer has renewed attention on his contribution to Nigerian entertainment and the generations of viewers who grew up watching his work.
Industry pays tribute
The Actors Guild of Nigeria confirmed Duru's death. Its president, Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, paid tribute to the actor, describing him as a great thespian.
Tributes are expected to continue as colleagues, fans and members of the entertainment industry reflect on his career and legacy.
