Harry Kane has reached the highest individual honour in football, winning the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or and becoming the first Englishman to receive the prestigious award since Michael Owen in 2001.
The Bayern Munich and England captain was crowned at the ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday, October 26, following a remarkable 2025/26 campaign in which his goals helped Bayern Munich secure a domestic league and cup double.
Kane scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich across all competitions during the season. Including his international performances, his total rose to 73 goals for club and country, underlining the extraordinary consistency that helped him emerge ahead of a field of elite contenders.
His victory marks a significant moment for English football. For 25 years, no English player had claimed the men’s Ballon d’Or, despite the country’s clubs remaining central to European football. Kane has now ended that wait through a season built on goals, discipline and sustained performance at the highest level.
From a long pursuit to football’s biggest individual prize
Kane’s achievement carries particular weight because of the journey behind it. Before becoming one of Europe’s most prolific forwards, he had to fight for opportunities and establish himself after loan spells early in his career.
His years at Tottenham Hotspur turned him into a Premier League scoring force, but major team honours proved elusive during much of his time in north London. His move to Bayern Munich in 2023 brought him into a new environment, where the expectation to deliver both goals and trophies was enormous.
The 2025/26 season provided the combination of individual productivity and collective success that often strengthens a Ballon d’Or case. Kane did not merely score at an exceptional rate; his goals contributed to Bayern’s domestic double, giving his campaign a team-achievement dimension as well.
He also scored six goals at the 2026 World Cup as England reached the semi-finals, further strengthening his case during a season in which international performances formed part of the wider discussion around the award.
Mbappé and Yamal finish behind Kane
The competition was far from straightforward. Kylian Mbappé finished second, while Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal placed third. Rodri and Lionel Messi completed the reported top five.
Mbappé’s explosive attacking performances and Yamal’s continued rise made them serious contenders, but Kane’s combination of goalscoring output and silverware ultimately carried him to the top of the voting.
Yamal did, however, leave the ceremony with recognition of his own, winning the men’s young-player award. His continued development suggests that the contest for football’s biggest individual honour could remain a major storyline in seasons to come.
Alexia Putellas wins the women’s Ballon d’Or
The women’s award went to Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas, who secured her third Ballon d’Or Féminin.
Putellas strengthened her legacy after helping Barcelona enjoy another successful campaign before moving to London City Lionesses. Her latest victory adds to the awards she won in 2021 and 2022, confirming her place among the defining players of her generation.
The ceremony also recognised achievements across the wider game, including young players, goalkeepers, coaches, clubs and humanitarian work. England winger Bukayo Saka received the Sócrates Award for his social contributions.
What Kane’s victory means
The Ballon d’Or is not simply a prize for the player who scores the most goals. Voters assess individual performances, contributions to team success and the player’s overall conduct, making the award a reflection of a season rather than one statistic.
Kane’s 2026 triumph demonstrates how sustained excellence can become decisive when matched with team success. His record-breaking numbers, Bayern’s domestic double and England’s World Cup campaign combined to make a compelling case.
For English football, the achievement ends a quarter-century wait. For Bayern Munich, it recognises a striker whose output has become central to the club’s ambitions. And for Kane, it represents the culmination of a long career spent pursuing the game’s biggest honours.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or will therefore be remembered not only as Kane’s personal breakthrough, but also as a landmark moment in English football history.
